An IP address is the numerical address assigned to each computer on the internet so that its location and activities can be distinguished from those of other computers.

The format of the broadly adopted IPv4 addresses is ##.##.##.## with each number ranging from 0 through 255. Since all IPv4 address blocks have been assigned, there is an ongoing effort to move to IPv6 addresses.
